Mrs. Renz's 4th Grade Class Redmond, Oregon

2009-2010 School Year Update

Our students are taking charge of their own fitness!  This year due to budget cuts, our Music and PE specialists were eliminated, so our ExerLearning program has students taking charge of their own fitness!  Thanks to the leadership and expertise of local fitness expert, Judy Shasek, students will be running the first ever ExerLearning Lab, the first one in the nation and the one from which all others will learn and model from.

Other Dance Mat Projects

Fourth and fifth grade students at our school don't sell sugary snacks and pop to raise money.  Instead, our students manage a dance mat vending station during lunch recess.  We "sell" fitness and have the added bonus of improving our eye tracking skills which helps improve reading.  The student "vendors" give turns to students, take money, manage the equipment, and keep records for their business.  All profits are reinvested into the dance mat business by purchasing more Play Stations, In the Groove game CDs, and dance mats.  Everyone wins with our business!   Our project received $1,000 from State Farm Insurance Company as one of 100 State Farm Good Neighbor Service Learning grant winners. Students also take "classroom turns" prior to academic tasks to help them get ready to learn.
