2009-2010 School Year Update Our students are taking charge of their own fitness! This year due to district-wide budget cuts, our Music and PE specialists were eliminated, so our ExerLearning program has students taking charge of their own fitness! Thanks to the leadership and expertise of local fitness expert, Judy Shasek, students will be running the first ever ExerLearning Lab, the first one in the nation and the one from which all others will learn and model from.
Students use the dance mats and ExerLearning Foot Pads to control games as part of our Music and PE program. These highly aerobic exercise involve connecting the mind with the body in coordination with the rhythm of the music.
It's a great workout and our many of our students have earned a spot in our 200+ Combo Club. This means students were able to step accurately to the fast pace of the song and move their body 200+ times without an error. Try it! It's not easy to stay that focused, but our students are now masters!
Students in our class use dance mats to improve fitness and help them get ready to read and study math. In the past, students operated and ran a vending station business during lunch recess. They sold fitness turns to their peers!

| We have a student-managed fitness program that serves our school. Students in 4th and 5th grade have provided 10-15 bursts of physical activity in the form of a dance video game for two years. They mentor their peers and manage all aspects of the program. The video game also helps students with visual tracking and patterning crucial to reading success. It takes no teacher time, and adds enormous benefits to the learning environment. Students learn to integrate technology not only with the dance game but through the websites they create. They want to teach other students across the country how to add all types of good exercise and skills to school. They also learn about the music in the dance game, thus becoming more aware of the music their families (diverse cultures) enjoy. At recess and lunch the students manage a business that sells dance time and all proceeds are donated to the school for more dance mats, so more students can mentor, become fit and do service learning. Everyone wins with our business! | |
