JASON goes from the deepest
ocean depths to the soaring rainforest canopies, from icy Polar
Regions to red-hot volcanoes, using cutting-edge technology to take
millions of students and teachers on an exhilarating real science
adventure. JASON began as the dream of Dr. Robert Ballard, the
scientist and oceanographer who discovered the wreck of the RMS
Titanic in 1986. Ballard's pioneering development of remotely
operated tools enabled scientists located far from a research site
to observe and record phenomena otherwise inaccessible to them. This
concept, dubbed "telepresence," opened new doors for researchers
from around the globe. They could now "be there without being
there." Ballard believed these systems could work for teachers and
students as well, by enabling them to participate in fieldwork from
the classroom. The JASON Project was born from this powerful idea.
Through a unique partnership of private industry, scientific
research facilities, museums, government and educational
organizations, Ballard's dream came to life in 1989 when thousands
of students joined him, via live satellite broadcasts, on a
Mediterranean Sea Expedition. Since then, JASON has grown to include
over 33,000 teachers and 1.7 million students around the world.
Today, JASON continues to bring REAL
