Rock Climbing - Washington, 1973 |
This is me (Heather Reekie Renz) at age 15 rappelling over a cliff in the Columbia Gorge in the State of Washington. My dad, brother Mark, and I took a Mazamas mountain climbing class in order to prepare for the Mt. Hood climb. It was pretty scary rappelling backwards over cliffs but it was a great feeling of accomplishment afterwards. |

Mt. St. Helens - 1973 At 9677 feet elevation before it blew it's top Mt. St. Helens was the fifth highest mountain in the State of Washington |
|
This is Mt St Helens as it was before the gigantic eruption blew off its entire top. This was to have been our Mazama graduation climb. In 1973 my Dad, brother Mark, and I set out to climb to the top. As we climbed, an adverse weather pattern developed and wisely we abandoned our effort to reach the top. Our next Mazama climb was to the top of Mt. Hood which we successfully accomplished. |

Mt. Hood
My Dad, brother Mark, and me (Heather) on the summit of Mt. Hood. We climbed the Hog's Back route on the south side of the mountain. I was 15 and going to be a sophomore in high school in the fall. Climbing Mt. Hood was the "final exam" and graduation from the Mazamas classes. We set out from the Mt. Hood Lodge at the 5,000 foot level at 2:00 am in the dark of the morning, climbing up the snowfields by the light of the moon. We used crampons on our boots and using ice axes to cut footsteps on the upper slopes, we reached the summit before noon. The view from the top and the feeling of accomplishment was incredible! At age 15, this experience of climbing to the summit of Mt. Hood, the highest mountain in the state of Oregon, taught me that by setting a goal I could do anything. |

Black Butte - July 2004, 2007, 2008 Location: Cascade Range, near Sisters, Oregon Elevation: 6,325 feet
Black Butte is a great quick 4 mile hike. We hike it about five times each summer. Each time I walk it, I try to beat my time. |

Me coming down from the summit. It was very steep and the rocks were loose underfoot. Not fun! |
|
The trail up to the summit is to the left of this photo. The glacier drained into a glacial lake just out of the photo to the right. |
Me part way up the mountain. Notice the cool lava flow in the background. |
My dad was 79 1/2 when we climbed to the summit of South Sister. It was a hard climb, but I kept telling myself . . . if my dad could do it, surely I could, too! |
