Vern Patrick School

4th Grade Class of 2001-2002

Government Unit - We passed a bill in our classroom legislature and it became a classroom law!  Oregon Senator Clarno also came and talked to us.  Our Senate bill # SB6302 states "...there will be no homework for the rest of the year..."  Of course, Governor Renz vetoed it, but the Senate and House overrode it with a 2/3 majority vote, so it became a classroom law anyway!

ABCs of Pioneer Life Book - Each student created his or her own ABC's of Pioneer Life book.  Students selected their favorite page and it is included here in our class book for you to enjoy.

"What's In My Desk?" Poem- We wrote and recorded the lyrics to a hilarious class poem. It is a Power Point slideshow and has about 33 slides.  Click the projector in the lower right corner and it will advance automatically.  We hope you enjoy watching it as much as we enjoyed making it.

Iditarod Race from Anchorage to Nome - Students drew the name of an Iditarod musher and tracked their progress three times a day using the Internet.  We did "Iditarod Math" and "Iditarod Language" questions each day of the race.  Click here to look at some photos of our map and sleds arranged in order of their finish.  This project also went along nicely with our JASON Project "Frozen Worlds" study.

Frozen Worlds JASON III Unit Projects

Antarctic Newsletters - As part of our JASON XIII "Frozen Worlds" studies, our class was divided into seven research teams. Each team created a newsletter using MS Word and MS Publisher.  Our newsletters are really informative!  You should take a look at them.

Antarctic Research Posters - Our class is part of the JASON XIII "Frozen Worlds" Project.  Using the Scottish Storyline method, we got into research teams and learned all about Antarctica.  As a team, we word processed our reports and created a poster.

Inspiration Timelines - Students created a hand-written timeline of their famous person's life.  Several students decided they'd like to recreate their timeline using the Inspiration program for extra credit.

Biography Slide Shows - Some of our students completed a Power Point slide show about the life of the famous person they were researching.  This was an extra credit project which students completed in their spare time.

"Newspapers of the Times" - During our biography unit, we read and used the Internet to research the life of a famous person.  Then we used Microsoft Publisher to create a newspaper with articles including the person's birth and death announcement, something about their education, family, and accomplishments.  We also listed trivia and quotes.

Biography Character Sketches - We drew a portrait of the famous person we are researching for our biography study.

Excel Graphing Surveys Unit - We developed a survey, which our classmates all took.  We tallied the results, drew graphs on Excel, and wrote three summary statements about what we learned from reading our graph.

"I Am" Poems - We wrote poems with three stanzas about ourselves in September.
