Mrs. Renz's 4th Grade Class Redmond, Oregon

May 5, 2003

We had an excellent guest speaker who taught the students all about the parts of a rainbow trout.  He showed students a huge steelhead salmon and had them guess if they thought it was a male or female.  We learned that it was a female when he cut it open and it had several thousand eggs in it.  Click here to see the eggs.  Each pair of students shared one trout and identified and dissected all of the body parts.  It was an educational day, but our room was very fishy smelling for the rest of the day!

Science Rules!

Identifying the body parts

was easier than getting

them out in one piece.

Eggs from a steelhead salmon

The female steelhead was loaded with thousands of eggs!

The air bladder on the steelhead was still filled with air.

The air bladder from a steelhead salmon was much larger!

Oh cool!  It's the air bladder from the rainbow trout!
