Passing a Classroom Bill into Law in Our Classroom Legislature

May 25, 2005

Students came up with ideas for possible bills which our classroom legislature could turn into a bill.  Our classroom House of Representatives voted to assign no homework for the rest of the year.  Our classroom House of Representatives wrote up a bill and voted for no homework. As you might guess, the bill won the vote of both houses.  The Senators and the Representatives heard arguments for and against the bill.  The Speaker of the House conducted the official vote.

The bill was then set on Governor Renz's desk.  Being the busy Governor she is, Governor Renz could not sign it right away.  She considered it carefully, then explained that she had to veto the bill because she thought students should not be denied the educational opportunities that would be lost by eliminating homework.

The legislators then got back into action.  They knew that if 2/3 of the members voted for the bill that they could override the Governor's veto.  The President of the Senate again polled the Senators and voted in favor of the bill.  The House of Representatives also passed the bill with over a 2/3 majority.  So, HB#1-5242005 passed with an override of the Governor's veto and became a classroom law anyway.  The new classroom law became effective May 31, 2005.
