OUR CLASSROOM LEGISLATURE May 2006 |

Students came up with ideas for possible bills that our classroom legislature could turn into a bill. It was a close vote between having no homework for the rest of the year and having no study hall during lunch recess for the rest of the year, but the no study hall bill won. Senators wrote up the bill, SB52306, and the Senators and the Representatives heard arguments for and against the bill. The President of the Senate conducted the official vote. It passed the Senate with a vote in favor of 7-3. The bill then moved on to the House where the Speaker of the House polled the House members. Again, the bill passed with a majority vote. The bill was then set on Governor Renz's desk. She considered it carefully, then explained that she had to veto the bill because she thought students should not be denied the right to gain additional help on their school work during recess. She felt the bill denied them an education. See the Vetoed Class Bill The Legislators then got back into action. They knew that if 2/3 of the members voted for the bill that they could override the Governor's veto. The President of the Senate again polled the Senators and Representatives. There was not a majority of votes to override the Governor's veto so the bill died. The Legislators went back to work, drafting another bill. This time they proposed a coupon that excuses some or all homework assignments. This bill easily passed both the House an Senate and was signed by Governor Renz so SB52606 passed and became a classroom law! Read the Bill that Passed. See the Homework Pass |
