National Youth Service Day supports youth on a life-long path of service and civic engagement, and educates the public, the media, and elected officials about the role of youth as community leaders. We are proud to be chosen one of the 100 schools to receive this honor.  Our school was awarded $1,000 to promote our program.

At Vern Patrick Elementary, our 4th and 5th grade students are taking fitness and academic success into our own hands. Our school has no extra money to buy the dance mat stations that provide us 10-30 minutes of aerobic exercise and valuable eye tracking practice needed to improve reading and fitness so our students began selling three songs on the popular video game for 50 cents. To date, we have donated over $400 to our school.

Better yet, we were recently awarded a national grant from State Farm Insurance and Youth Service America. On April 21 we will invite local and state dignitaries and their own families to participate in our powerful mentoring project. Yes, our students run the program all day long via peer mentoring. Why? Research shows that 10 minutes of rhythmic aerobic activity before a task like reading and math leads to greater academic success. Kids love it so much they are absent 25% fewer days.
