Passing a Classroom Bill into Law in Our Classroom Legislature May 2008 |
![]() |
| Students came
up with ideas for possible bills which our classroom legislature could
turn into a bill. Our classroom House of Representatives voted to
earn more Collegiate Cash. Our classroom Senate wrote up a bill and voted for
bringing snacks. The Senators and the Representatives heard arguments
for and against the bill. The bill that moved forward to the
Governor's desk was the Senate Bill for bringing snacks.
The bill was then set on Governor Renz's desk. Being the busy Governor she is, Governor Renz could not sign it right away. She considered it carefully, then explained that she had to veto the bill because upon Judicial review, the bill was an unfunded mandate. The bill asked students and families to donate two days of snacks for the class. Since our class has 29 students, a an average of 50 cents per student, that would be an expense of $14.50 spent each day for the rest of the year. Since we have 12 days of school left, that would be a cost of $174.00. The bill could not be over ridden by the legislators due the fact that the classroom judicial Branch deemed it unconstitutional. See the failed bill. A new bill for no homework for the rest of the year was immediately drafted and voted upon. It passed the House with a vote of 17 yes to 0 no and it passed the Senate with a vote of 6 yes, 3 no. The bill was signed by Governor Renz on May 27, 2008 so it becomes classroom law immediately. |
