Building Tsunami Evacuation Shelters for our Oregon State University Field Trip

October 2009

After studying about landforms, earthquakes and volcanoes, our fourth graders built tsunami evacuation shelters in class.  Students were given a design challenge by Alicia Lyman Holt, Outreach Coordinator at Oregon State University.  Their task: To build a tsunami evacuation shelter.  They had 6 "walls" and 20 "columns" plus some double sided sticky tape and a base board.  On October 26th we will visit OSU and students will see how their shelters lasted through the simulated tsunami that is created by the Hinsdale Wave Research Lab

Our message is...."Don't be scared....Be prepared."

Below are some photos of the structures student engineers created.  See the tsunami engineering booklet I created for students to record their engineering work.

The Question:  Will they stand up to the waves?

We will see on October 26th when we visit OSU!
