Each student wrote and illustrated his or her own ABCs of Pioneer Life book.

Dedication

We dedicate this book to all the pioneers who traveled the Trail.  We also dedicate this book to anyone who had or has ancestors that traveled the Trail.

A is for all the animals that crossed the Oregon Trail.  It is also for all the adventure that the people had.

Buffalo chips were used for the fire to cook food when wood was hard to find.  B is for blankets that the pioneers used.

Everyone traveled in a covered wagon.  Chimney Rock is a famous landmark.  It looks like a chimney.    There was a disease going around that was called cholera.  Lots of people died because of it.

D is for all the deer they killed.  D is for dusty roads the pioneers went over.

Elk were hard to hunt for on the trail.  Sometime they would encounter strange people.

Forts were an important part of the trail.  Fur trappers were after what Oregon was famous for, beaver skins.

G is for the girls who had to clean the animals' noses when they got too much dust in their nose.  G is for the guns the men brought for hunting when they were low on meat.

H is for all the horses that some people rode on the trail.  H is also for Fort Hall which is a very small fort.

Independence Rock was a big landmark on the trail.  Some people on the trail saw illusions on the trail.  They called it "Seeing the elephant."

J is for journey.  The Oregon Trail was a big, huge journey.  Everybody had a journal.  They would mostly write what had happened during the day.

K is for the kids that went on the trail.  K is also for the state Kansas that they had to travel through.

Little children sometimes got lost on the trail or got kidnapped.  Pioneers went to Oregon to get free land.

Malaria was  a disease caused by mosquito bites.  Independence, Missouri was called the jumping off town because that is where you would get all of your supplies and get on the trail.

On the trail you were out in nature all day.  There were a lot of Native Americans the pioneers met on the trail.

O is for Oregon, the place the pioneers were going.  O is for oxen that pulled the wagons.

People had pigs and pistols. There was a lot of plains.

There were quilts made by women.  There were lots of pesky and beautiful quail.  No one said much except what they were going to do so it was quiet

People caught rabbits so their family could have a nice dinner.  Some people said it tasted like chicken.  Men or women rode horses on the Oregon Trail.

There was hardly any shade so you can imagine how hot it was.  If Indians were close by, they would sometimes steal.  Some of the rivers they crossed were the Snake River and Sweetwater River.  They called it Sweetwater River because the water was good and cold.  If your shoes wore out, your mom or dad would make you some or a shoemaker in your group would make you some.

T is for the tongue of the wagon.  It is also for trading, trails, and Three Island Crossing, which was the most dangerous crossing on the trail.

Some pioneers had to travel through Utah and Umatilla.

V is for the violins that the pioneers played.  V is for the vinegar that the people used to cook with.

There were bad wounds along the way.  Near the end they were very weak.

Some kids would bring a xylophone to play with.  It was extra hard going up the hills but when they got to Oregon it was exciting.

"Yipee," might have been yelled during celebrations.  There was lots of yarn for kids and women.  

There were many young children.

Z is for that the trail was zig zaggy and very bumpy.  They had to zoom across the trail to get their 320 acres of land.
